1. What is Negation?
Negation is used to say “no” or “not”.
Example:
- Je parle français → I speak French
- Je ne parle pas français → I do not speak French
2. Structure of Negation
Basic rule:
Subject + ne + verb + pas
Examples:
- Je ne parle pas
- Tu ne manges pas
- Il ne joue pas
3. Special case (Vowel or silent “h”)
Rule:
ne → n’ before a vowel or silent “h”
Examples:
- Je aime → Je n’aime pas
- Il habite → Il n’habite pas
4. Negation with ÊTRE
Examples:
- Je suis fatigué → Je ne suis pas fatigué
- Il est ici → Il n’est pas ici
5. Negation with AVOIR
Examples:
- J’ai un livre → Je n’ai pas de livre
- Il a un stylo → Il n’a pas de stylo
Important rule:
un / une / des → de / d’ in negative sentences
6. Negation with -ER Verbs
Examples:
- Je parle → Je ne parle pas
- Je joue → Je ne joue pas
7. Sentence structure reminder
Always:
- ne comes before the verb
- pas comes after the verb

1. Missing “ne”
Incorrect: Je parle pas
Correct: Je ne parle pas
2. Wrong position
Incorrect: Je ne pas parle
Correct: Je ne parle pas
3. Forgetting “de”
Incorrect: Je n’ai pas un livre
