TEF B2 Goal – What the examiner expects
At B2 level, a candidate:
- understands both the main idea and details, including implicit meaning
- expresses ideas clearly and logically
- uses complex grammatical structures with no serious (blocking) errors
- can argue, explain, and qualify opinions
If these elements are missing, B2 will not be awarded.
1. ESSENTIAL B2 Grammar (must be actively used)
Not just “knowing” the grammar, but using it naturally and correctly.
Core B2 Grammar
- Indirect speech → He says that…
- Present subjunctive → It is necessary that…
- Conditional → I would like / We could…
- Object pronouns → le, lui, en, y
- Relative pronouns → who, that, where
- Combined past tenses:
- imperfect + past perfect + present perfect
- Logical connectors:
- however, nevertheless, therefore, on the other hand
Without these grammar points, B2 is impossible.
2. B2 Listening – How to train effectively
What makes B2 listening difficult
- information is rephrased
- use of indirect speech
- synonyms instead of repeated vocabulary
- hidden or implied opinions
Effective training strategy
- listen without translating
- identify:
- Who is speaking?
- Why?
- What is the consequence?
- work with audio scripts (as you already do)
Goal: understand meaning, not every single word.
3. B2 Reading – Winning strategy
Types of texts in TEF
- opinion articles
- administrative messages
- advice and explanatory texts
Method
- Read the questions first
- Identify keywords
- Look for synonyms and reformulations in the text
TEF trap: the correct answer is never copied word-for-word from the text.
4. B2 Writing – What increases your score
Section A (40–60 words)
(correct) clear
(correct) polite
(correct) well structured
(wrong) no arguments
(wrong) no storytelling
Section B (120–150 words)
Mandatory structure:
- Reference to the article
- Clear opinion
- Argument 1 + example
- Argument 2
- Counter-argument + response
- Formal conclusion
B2-level expressions to use
- It is obvious that…
- One cannot deny that…
- However / Nevertheless…
- It would be preferable to…
5. B2 Speaking – The key to success
Section A (asking questions)
(correct) ask many questions
(correct) be polite
(correct) do not explain or justify
Automatic phrases:
- Could you clarify…?
- Is it true that…?
- I would like to know…
Section B (expressing an opinion)
Fixed structure:
Opinion → Argument → Example → Argument → Acknowledge → Convince
What confirms B2 level
- complete sentences
- logical connectors
- personal example
- natural, confident tone
6. B2 Vocabulary (by themes)
You must master:
- general verbs (allow, avoid, improve…)
- cause and consequence expressions
- opinion phrases
- TEF theme vocabulary (daily life, work, health, etc.)
You are already doing this very well with Theme 1.
