1. Three ways to ask questions in French

A. Intonation (simple form)

Same sentence + rising voice

Structure:

Statement + ? (voice goes up)

Examples:

  • Tu parles français ?
  • Tu vas à l’école ?

Use:

  • Informal
  • Everyday conversation

B. Est-ce que (most common)

Structure:

Est-ce que + subject + verb

Examples:

  • Est-ce que tu parles français ?
  • Est-ce que tu vas à l’école ?

Use:

  • Neutral
  • Safe for all situations

C. Inversion (more formal)

Structure:

Verb – subject

Examples:

  • Parles-tu français ?
  • Vas-tu à l’école ?

Important rule:

Add a hyphen (-)

3. Using question words

A. With Est-ce que

Examples:

  • Où est-ce que tu habites ?
  • Pourquoi est-ce que tu étudies ?

B. With Inversion

Examples:

  • Où habites-tu ?
  • Pourquoi étudies-tu ?

4. Questions in different tenses

A. Present

  • Est-ce que tu parles français ?

B. Passé composé

  • Est-ce que tu as mangé ?

C. Futur proche

  • Est-ce que tu vas étudier ?

5. Answering questions

A. Short answers

  • Oui
  • Non

B. Full answers

  • Oui, je parle français
  • Non, je ne parle pas français

6. Special Case: “Qu’est-ce que”

Used for “What”

Structure:

  • Qu’est-ce que tu fais ?

7. Common mistakes

1. Wrong order

Incorrect: Tu est-ce que parles ?
Correct: Est-ce que tu parles ?

2. Missing inversion

Incorrect: Parles tu ?
Correct: Parles-tu ?

3. Using wrong question word

Incorrect: Qui tu habites ?
Correct: Où tu habites ?
