Overall Goal of PART 2

In this part, you move from isolated sentences (Part 1) to:

  • Talking about other people
  • Asking for and giving personal information
  • Building longer, more complete sentences
  • Using regular verbs confidently
  • Saying what they do / do not do

This is a key transition module in TEF preparation.

1. S’informer sur quelqu’un (Asking about someone)

On the board — Common questions

Question Meaning
Comment il / elle s’appelle ? What is his/her name?
Il / Elle a quel âge ? How old is he/she?
Il / Elle est étudiant(e) ? Is he/she a student?
Il / Elle vient d’où ? Where is he/she from?
Il / Elle habite où ? Where does he/she live?

2. Présenter quelqu’un (Presenting someone)

Structure (very important)

Il / Elle + verb + information

Examples

  • Il s’appelle Karim.
  • Elle est professeure.
  • Il a 30 ans.
  • Elle habite en France.
  • Il travaille dans un bureau.

Voici mon ami.
Il s’appelle David.
Il a 25 ans.
Il est étudiant.

3. Informations personnelles (Personal information)

Key information to master

  • Name → s’appeler
  • Age → avoir
  • Job → être
  • Nationality → être
  • City / country → habiter / venir de

Examples

  • Je m’appelle Amina.
  • J’ai 22 ans.
  • Je suis étudiante.
  • Je suis indienne.
  • J’habite à Mumbai.
  • Je viens de l’Inde.

Common mistake:

  • Je suis 22 ans
  • J’ai 22 ans

4. Verbes en -ER / -GER / -IR

This is the most important grammar point of PART 2.

A. Verbes en -ER (Regular verbs)

Most French verbs end in -ER.
If you learn one pattern, you can use many verbs.

Conjugation pattern — example: parler

Pronoun Form
je parle
tu parles
il / elle parle
nous parlons
vous parlez
ils / elles parlent

Common -ER verbs (TEF A1)

  • parler (to speak)
  • aimer (to like)
  • travailler (to work)
  • habiter (to live)
  • étudier (to study)

Examples

  • Je parle français.
  • Elle travaille à l’hôpital.
  • Nous habitons à Delhi.
  • Ils aiment le sport.

B. Verbes en -GER

-GER verbs are -ER verbs with a small spelling change.

Example: manger

nous mangeons (extra e)

Example sentences

  • Je mange à la maison.
  • Nous mangeons à midi.
  • Ils mangent au restaurant.

TEF tip

The extra e keeps the pronunciation soft.

C. Verbes en -IR (basic group)

Example: finir

Conjugation — finir

Examples

  • Je finis le travail à 5 heures.
  • Elle finit l’école à 4 heures.
  • Nous finissons tôt.

5. Prépositions de lieu (1)

Prepositions show where someone is or lives.
They are very frequent in TEF speaking and writing.

Basic prepositions

Preposition Use Example
à city à Paris
en feminine country en France
au masculine country au Canada
aux plural country aux États-Unis

Examples

  • J’habite à Lyon.
  • Elle habite en Inde.
  • Il habite au Maroc.
  • Ils habitent aux États-Unis.

6. La négation (ne… pas)

To say no / not, French uses two words.

Structure

ne + verb + pas

Examples

  • Je ne suis pas étudiant.
  • Il ne travaille pas.
  • Nous n’habitons pas ici.

Spoken French note:

In speaking, ne may be dropped, but in TEF, use both.

Compare

  • Positive: Je travaille.
  • Negative: Je ne travaille pas.

  • Listen for key words, not every word
  • Verbs guide meaning:
    • est → identity
    • a → age
    • habite → place
    • travaille → job
    • ne… pas → negative
  • Write short answers (1–3 words)
